Starr Walton Hurley

Starr’s involvement in the Olympic Games goes back to her role as a Torch Bearer in 1960 at the opening of the 8th Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California. 4 years later she competed in the Olympic Games at Innsbruck, Austria. She was the top American finisher in the downhill and finished 9 over all in world rankings. She has both United States Junior and Senior National Champion titles and was voted “Skier of the Year” by The Winter Sports Writers Association in 1963. She has continued to be involved with skiing in her business of “Starr Trekk” groups to ski areas around the world. In addition she has been the United States Coach of the International Transplant Games for competitors who have received organ transplants. In 2002, she was again an Olympic Torch Bearer at Squaw Valley for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake. In 2010, she carried the Olympic Torch again in Squaw Valley for the 50 Year Olympic Celebration!

In 2012 Starr was inducted into the McClatchy Athletic Hall of Fame. She is an active volunteer with the Northern California Olympians, the Sacramento Sister City Council, Co-Chair Sports Diplomacy Committee of Sister Cities International, Volunteer of the Year 2013 Sister Cities International, Trustee with the Sacramento Zoo, the Leadership Council of UC Davis Medical Center and Advisory Board of Drexel University, Sacramento. Well traveled, Starr currently lives in El Macero and is Honorary Consul for New Zealand. She is also an avid golf player!
